24 Hour Countdown ...
Up at 6:30 am for breakfast. Mike headed out for a loop of the swim course, leaving from the hotel beach. Talk about convenient! The Golden Arrow Hotel in downtown Lake Placid is really great. Not to mention the wonderful hotel staff. Yesterday, they cleaned the room with Logan in it and then later gifted him a tennis ball & doggie treats wrapped in a cute cellophane packet. How amazing!

Swimming!
After a quick breakfast of amazing granola that Virginia had found (Dorset Cereal - from the UK!), Mike headed to the Gatorade swim for a lap. We met up with Debbie Cavender who did a short swim, sans wetsuit. She was great - shared w. us that she got a little freaked out in the water without the bouyancy of a wetsuit. Debbie is a very strong swimmer, so somehow, her fears helped settle me down as I had these feelings of freaking out at every swim.
Multisport Breakfast & Words of Wisdom from IM Champions
Went to the Multisport breakfast at the Northwoods Inn. Food was horrible and mostly gone when I arrived 10 minutes late (no oatmeal, just gluteny danishes and some sour fruit cocktail & gelatin-filled yogurt). The coffee & OJ were perfect fluids though and I shouldn't complain as it was all complimentary (aka, FREE!)
Paula, Heather, Sue Fraser, Jimmy Riccatello and Michael Lovato all spoke.
Paula's advice was to go out and 'Have a Day' - she said some of us would have a GREAT day, but regardless, we'd all have a 'Day' and it was up to us to handle what the course and conditions threw at us. Her analysis that athletes get to the race and think something magical is going to happen & everything will fall into place - that is hardly the case. We'd have tough times and wonderful times and it was up to us to determine how we'd handle it. For example, if we bonked on a long ride, we'd go into a convenience store and grab a Snickers bar & Red Bull to pull us out of it. We needed to do the same planning and have backup strategies for race day. The key was to keep asking yourself what your body needs and try things to deal with the issue. [I'd call upon this advice on race day more than I realized!]
Michael Lovato was absolutely hilarious.
Sue Fraser stopped to chat after the talk. She is totally amazing with all the planning and work she does for NA Sports. Honestly, I think she's the brains behind everything! And so modest, too!
Saw Debbie having a very nice-looking blueberry pancake breakfast and as we were talking, it became so apparent to me the wonderful things I have in my life, thanks to my husband. He really has helped me more than I could have hoped/asked.
I got back to the hotel just as Mike & Virginia were heading out - we had errands to run to prep for Sunday!
- My spare tyre needed to be stretched & glued. Wayne (whose place we swim at on Friday mornings) had suggested to take it to the Inside Out Sports guys. Of course - my buddy, Lawrence "Tractor" Garcia, would take care of it. We dropped it off to be picked up on Saturday.
- Mike picked up the additional batteries for the cycle computer [who knew it took 4!!! Juan had loaned me one, I bought one, but still needed two more!!] and get whatever other small things I needed.
- We also picked out a new race belt - Mike teased me that mine was so old school it still used safety pins to hold the number! I liked it b/c it was from a friend's company, Rip 'n' Hammer, acquired when I first started racing duathlons in Canada over 14 years ago. But yeah, the new Fuel Belt one was sweet and could be accessorized w. a little pouch for electrolyte tabs.
I was so thankful to have my fabulous husband to walk me through the options and help guide the process, as well as take care of things! He is fantastic!
We placed everything on the bed and went thru the scenarios, including planning out the nutrition/bottles I'd need, when I'd take things. It went so smoothly and we had a very sleepy little supervisor in Lolo
Dinner Plans
We had planned to pick up an extra ticket for my wonderful husband to join us at the Athlete's Banquest/PreRace Dinner. Mike & Virginia had tried to get an extra ticket but no luck - were told it was sold out, but we could go to the dinner and buy a ticket from an athlete who had an extra one. We drove out to the Horseshow Grounds. Nice idea - didn't pan out as about 30 others athletes hoped to do the same.
As we waited for an opportunity to buy a ticket, Juan and Mike Thacker (also from the Multisports Camp) came up and suggested that since they needed three extra tickets for Mike's family/crew, we should just go & eat at a nice restaurant. Nicola's it was for the second night in a row, but we knew what we wanted to eat, at least! We sold our extra ticket and headed back into town. :)
Thursday, 17 July 2008: Amazing things in store!
Gatorade Swim
The Gatorade Swim is simply a cordened area open from 7 - 11 am each day, starting on Wednesday to race day. Volunteers provide bright green Gatorade plastic bags for you to store your gear while you swim. They write a number (1 to infinity!) on the bag and on your hand with dark black marker so you can claim your kit when done. They'll also give you a bottle of Gatorade Endurance formula when you are done. It's a very nice perk!
Virginia, Logan & I were the first to arrive as the volunteers opened, right at 7:00 am. Other swimmers already in the water and getting their wetsuits on, but when I dropped my gear, I was stunned to receive 'Number 1' on my bag and hand. Wild. Certainly that would be a good omen for being able to complete my first IM!
The woman at the table also recognized that Logan was a soft-coated Wheaton Terrier. She had raised a Norwich Terrier who had won Westminster! Wow. We got star treatment with Lolo there!
The swim went well - very easy 42 minutes. I was encouraged that I did it, but still nervous about being able to do two laps with 2500+ athletes surrounding me in a giant washing machine!
Registration
After cleaning up, we walked down to the Transition area & I registered for the race! Ha, ha, ha! Almost forgot the most important thing. It was unbelievably easy. Small line in the High School gymnasium, gave my name, signed my sheets of paper, weighed in [much heavier than expected - what up w. that?? Darn taper] and then had a nice volunteer walk me thru the packet w. numbers and sparkly bracelet which I'd wear for the next four days. Picked up race poster & an extra banquet ticket for Virginia... I was a little miffed to pay $25 for catered pasta & iceberg lettuce salad, but hey, you only do your first IM once!
A Short Ride to Test the Bike, followed by a T-Run
After the swim, we chilled for a bit - had lunch & I had sent an email to ride with one of the guys from the Multisports Camp, Juan Andrade. We met up at 1:00 pm and rode the run course loop, heading up into Lake Placid to ride the Three Bears (a series of gentle, small hills which loom larger than life in the race - Momma Bear, a tiny bump known as Baby Bear, followed by the much steeper Poppa Bear]. In less than the first mile, my cycle computer started blinking, then went dead. Wow - what a good thing to actually do a test ride! Note for next year: Swap out batteries on computer!!!
As we rode out of town, there was a cyclist in front of us who seemed to be tooling around. Juan passed him first and as I rode up, I thought there was something VERY familiar about the guy's low-rider shorts, muffin top & orange t-shirt blowing in the wind. Sure enough - it was Darren! Another guy from the Multisports Camp. He linked up with us and then he & Juan rode hard into town. I took it easy - very easy - tooling behind them.
My bike seat had been raised about 2 cm, so I really wanted to ensure it was not causing any leg/back problems. When I headed out for the t-run around the lake, I was incredibly comfortable. Perhaps it was due to the Taper & rest week, but I felt like I could run the entire course! The Newton shoes are also incredible.
The BEST Surprise EVER!!!
When I returned, after I showered, my sister insisted I have a nap. I wasn't going to argue that one as it seemed the stress of getting ready, driving & fearing the swim had exhausted me. Virginia decided to take Logan for a walk, so I settled down to rest and surf the Ironman Lake Placid info in an attempt to get organized for Sunday's main event.
They had been out for about 30 minutes when I heard a knock on the door and a male voice calling 'Room Service'. Huh? Likely a mistake in room number, but I thought I'd check it out. It even crossed my mind that if it was anything good, I'd just keep it for us!
I was confused as I opened the door to see Logan in his haltie. I guessed Virginia had arrived just behind the room service guy but when my glance caught the man I was speechless. IT WAS MY HUSBAND!
Mike had flown all the way from England to Montreal and driven to Lake Placid to support me in my first Ironman. WOW. My hands went to my mouth and I just stood there, tears welling up in my eyes. What a wonderful surprise! I am so blessed in being married to this amazing man.
After huge hugs and many kisses, I think I recovered, although I was in complete disbelief for at least the next hour!
I had worried that I'd not heard from Mike and he was offline from the computer for the last day. This could have been because he was incredibly busy or the work servers were experiencing difficulty - but he also hadn't called me the night prior. Again, not a stretch because he was likely exhausted, but it did worry me as it is our habit to talk every night [Thanks, Vonage!]. For a nanosecond, I considered that he might be coming to Lake Placid, but I immediately had dismissed the thought: how could he get time away when he was so busy? Besides he had just been here a week ago for the GM Shutdown period! I was so thrilled!!
Mike settled in and we spent the evening prepping for the race, having a wonderful dinner at Nicola's. They do some incredible dishes that border on gourmet, although the service was taxed by the volume of athletes!
I slept like a dream that night thinking just three more sleeps and I have the chance to be an Ironman!
Wednesday, 16 July 2008
Bright and early, we prepared to drive to Lake Placid. The plan had been to leave by 5:30 am to miss the rush hour traffic across the top of Toronto. Unfortunately, we had a later start than we'd liked. To add to things, Logan decided he'd like to make a run for it and took off up the street! After a short chase, I captured the little man and we headed out. 6:30 am. We were worried about traffic but hit a wonderful window and sped through to New York, stopping at a gas station to refuel (and for Logan to stretch again) as well as at the Ontario/New York border above Watertown, NY.
It may have been a sign, but as we drove thru Watertown, there was a deluge of rain. Mmmm ... The weather did clear as we drove to Placid, but during our stop in Tupper Lake, we had to abandon plans to eat lunch on a patio as a thunder storm rolled thru. Poor Logan tried to alternately climb into my lap and under my chair to be protected. We had to put him in the car, but he was stressed by the thunder and lightning.
Overall, he was a dream to travel with! Just settled down to look out the window.
We arrived at the Golden Arrow - our room was fabulous with a balcony & wonderful panoramic view of Mirror Lake and the swim course.
The hotel had prepared gift bags for all the athletes! How cool.
We settled our gear and took Logan for a tour of the downtown, swim and transition area.
Getting Ready for Ironman Lake Placid!
Tuesday, 15 July 2008
Spent the day running around crazily, trying to get everything done! Scheduled a myotherapy appointment with a new myotherapist who was very good - he worked on my neck and hip to loosen the tightness. I wasn't sure it would last until the weekend, especially as it was manic to get everything ready to leave.
After the appointment, drove to Ann Arbor and picked up my bike.
Ken was fabulous, setting up the bottle cage on the back of the P3C which was rather challenging! Although I'd not had the rear cage set for training, I was concerned that I needed it for the race (to stay hydrated). The argument against adding or using the bottle cages was the added weight to the bike. Each full 24 oz bottle weighs 2.5 lbs - if I used all cages, that would add 10 lbs to be carried up the hills in Placid. My plan was to use only one of the two at the rear, putting my spare tyre in the extra cage. More on how that worked later...
Arrived home around 4 pm, packed up the car and loaded Logan in for the drive to my sister's place in Cambridge, ON - about 3 hours away.
Virginia was fantastic - she had a wonderful order of Pad Thai takeout ready for me. It was great to finally relax & chill after the craziness of the day. Logan had a blast running around the large back yard - bombing up and down the small hill! He definitely needed to stretch his legs! He also had a bath and looks like a new puppy!

American Triple T Training Camp!

17 April 2008
An April Fool!
Thanks to a great MD who recommended a holistic approach (Yes, believe it! There are great doctors in the US who are not married to their prescription pads), I am recovered and ready, raring to get back into full-speed training! Headed to the pool yesterday - dark & early at 3:45 am! It was a beautiful, silent & calm workout. Felt fantastic!
Will head back today for another good swim followed by a run & weights - no, I'm not going to overdo it [Thanks for checking!] ; )

Great to be back!
Today was one of the latter - we had the day off from work [WHOO HOO] and I spent a couple of hours curled on the sofa in the sun room, basking in the beautiful day (although it was cold outside). The kitty cats, Bimmer & Rupert, were sunning on the window ledge and the back of the sofa. It was just so luxurious!
But I kicked my butt up and drove to the pool. Even as I got into the water, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to swim - the last couple of workouts have been a bit of a slog and not b/c they are difficult, but b/c I've been feeling lazy.
Right away I could feel the benefits of the hard weight/Total Conditioning workouts! My form felt great and even though I was slower & didn't complete the full set of 200's, I DID IT!
Wonder what the new music 'anthem' should be? U2's 'Beautiful Day' is a bit too obvious... INXS 'Beautiful Girl' a bit too OTT for me although the tune itself is great.
Stay tuned ... as you know I will think of something! : )
Happy Training & Ciao!

Highs & Lows of Training
At the IMLP Training Camp last June, we were warned about the highs & lows you could expect in an Ironman event. The same volatility obviously applies to training for an Ironman as well.
Yesterday, had a great transition run after a solid 90-minute Turbo bike session - wow! I felt like I could just hammer it, but remembered it was supposed to be HR#1 and settled into an easier pace.
Today, however, it was a slog to get thru a drill session in the pool - the first 600 metre portion of the warm-up (1000m total before the main set) was a struggle. It was a good mentally tough workout and I'm so glad I did it! The spectre of a 2.4 mile open water swim without sufficient training is too daunting! : )
10 March 2008
Amazing Results
Until yesterday, training results had been hard to quantify. I hadn't lost any weight to speak of - most likely because any fat was being replaced by muscle, which is heavier. I had seen marginal improvements on my run times and run/bike endurance. Swimming generally felt better.
The real indicator came when I was in a 'Strictly Strength' class at Lifetime Fitness (LTF). I had just done a 2 hour treadmill (dreadmill - don't you love that term?) and an hour of weights (where I had decided to do heavier weights). I debated whether or not to call it a day, but ultimately braved the class as being 'good for me'. We started with the usual figure-eight band on our feet for kicks and side movements, then did a series of deep squats. The usual aches, soreness and specific muscle fatigue did not materialize!
Amazingly, I was strong throughout. Even the thought of 2 hours of running indoors didn't dampen my resolve and I just blissfully ticked off the miles: 14 in all!
Today my legs, arms - whole body - is tired, but it does feel great!
The whole psychology of training is incredible: break down muscle to build it up - psyche included. Just when it's at a point of no return, rest then repeat the cycle.
Happy Training!

A Christmas Gift in March?
A rather nice information present that adds significant 'yardage' to what I thought I was doing.
And very helpful in setting expectations for my AT Test today!

Treadmill Warning!
I'd seen this incredible warning on the treadmill when I first used it - WTF? Short of breath? You are kidding? That is just about every time I step on the treadmill - at least if I'm really intending a workout.
No wonder it's so hard for Americans to get fit! There is a warning on their health equipment! [Although, given the number of hefty people I've seen at the Fitness Centre, I guess the attorneys are protecting the equipment manufacturers, sellers and the gyms - sigh!]
01 March 2008
Happy March!
Awesome day - 34F and sunny! The roads were pretty clear or at least packed and easy to run on. The new Nike trail shoes I picked up for a mere $41 are amazing.
29 February 2008
Pool Closure
Decisions, decisions.
Running has been going very well! I'm almost back on pace! Well, at least a minute off, but that is down 1.5 minutes from where I started just a mere 4 weeks ago! Only a few more months and I hope to be back on my PB 1/2 marathon pace!
Nutritionally, my training has helped motivate me to eat more healthful foods, prepared at home. About time, actually! Even the frozen or packaged meals are better than the convenience items of the Food Court at work. : )
On a bit note, too, I'm about to order a heart rate monitor (w. foot pod, cadence, altitude, etc). It's a huge investment, but I think will really help bring all the aspects of my workouts together.
I'm getting excited about this year!
Ciao & happy training,

Lessons of the Square Watermelon
The timing of the lesson could not have been better - I'd been dragging (as you can see from yesterday's post) and I never actually made it to the pool. Ugh. That weighed on me. Skipping workouts in favour of sleep/couch time is not a good way to prepare for one's first Ironman.
Part of me dreaded the workout - there were drills intercepted by a 500 & 400 yard straight swim. Ugh x 3!
I made it to the Fitness Centre. A woman in the change room was quite chatty - it seemed she was a breast cancer survivor (noted by the scars on her chest) and was just getting back into swimming. She was so enthusiastic, I felt guilty for avoiding the pool. She was quite complimentary, too - telling me I looked fantastic. We discussed that body image/fitness is all relative. What is important is to get out and be active.
Once in the pool, the water was FREEZING! The jets near my lane were channeling icy cold streams. Brrr. I started the workout and quickly lost count of my warmup laps. How many was that exactly!? After 40 minutes, I guessed I must be done and went right to the Main Set.
I was amazed by how easy the 500 yds straight felt after the drills! I just put my head down and counted the laps until it was time for the next drill set!
I finished the ENTIRE workout in 100 minutes - only 10 minutes longer than the time specified. As noted in one of the Lessons of the Square Watermelon:
Impossibilities often aren't: If you begin with the notion that something is impossible, then it obviously will be for you. If, on the other hand, you decide to see if something is possible or not, you will find out through trial and error.
So not only was it possible to finish the workout, it was possible to do 500 yds straight and still have reserve! I AM GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO THE 2.4 MILE SWIM IN LAKE PLACID! Just a matter of time - maybe only a month from now, I'll be knocking out a full 4600 yd workout in 90 minutes!
Oh, and if you are curious about the Watermelons, check out this link:

25 February 2008
Should I ...
Not ideal.
So much for the habit - I guess I need to swim for 21 days straight for it to take! Ha, ha, ha!
So the question becomes, should I deek off work now (2:00 pm-ish), get to the pool and swim from 3:00 - 5:00 pm? Or, should I go home, nap and swim later this evening? Neither one sounds great at the moment, b/c I feel so tired! But if at least I get a nap in, I may have a better workout. Which means I'm leaning to the latter option - the one that also keeps my conscience clear, too!

Habit Forming
It takes at least 21 days to form a habit. This means that you have to do something at least 21 times before it begins to become part of your everyday routine. So . . .
- Decide exactly what you want to do. Write it down and post it where you can see it every day, like your bathroom mirror. Be as specific as possible. [CHECK: it is in my training plan & logbook.]
- Schedule time to do what you want to do. Again, it takes 21 days to form a habit, so schedule at least 21 days on your calendar and don't let anything get in the way of your schedule. If you miss one of your scheduled days, it's best to start over and schedule another 21 days. You must be consistent and dedicated to doing what you want to do. [CHECK - sort of ... I do set time aside to do this, but it is not currently a 'regularly' scheduled slot in my day - not even on weekends. Yet. But it will be!]
- Once you reach your 21 days, congratulations! Don't stop now though, schedule another 21 days, and then another and so on, until you do those things you want to do, without even thinking about them . . . like brushing your teeth. [CHECK: 21 days and counting on another 21 and another and ...]
So here's to my new Ironman Training Habit! Happy Training!

22 February 2008
It's coming together!
I do need to get into a nice routine. : )
Last evening, after my run & weights, I FINALLY fell asleep and stayed asleep for a regular period of time. Although it was a bit short, I actually did sleep well.
Today, I've enjoyed my day off from training - I feel a bit 'antsy'. Like I should be doing something - but actually, I can feel that I've needed the rest. I did nice girly things - running errands, shopping in Birmingham and actually making dinner! YAY.
Just roasting some coffee now for the week ahead and will be just about set. : )

Sleeping like CRAP!
AAARGHHH! I thought it might have been temporary, but it seems to be continuing. The only good thing about being utterly exhausted today is that maybe I will gut it through the day and the evening workout to be able to get to sleep tonight.
Not sure what it is but it needs to resolve soon - sleep is the best way for me to recover and that doesn't seem to be happening!
Zzzzzzzz [ciao!],

A Late Night Swim ... maybe too late!
Last night, after a 4.5 hour dentist appointment for a root canal, I made it to the pool and finished my 90-minute drill workout just before 11:00 pm.
That is a little bit too late to workout! But I did it. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the pool to myself - there always seemed to be some recreational swimmer in the lane next to me - one guy was even doing some sort of water running which looked more like hopping! It was hilarious!

17 February 2008
Another great weekend of workouts!
That was followed by a 3-hour ride on Saturday plus t-run. I didn't think I would have the NRG for a run - no matter how short and easy an effort. But it felt fantastic to be out on the roads! I overdressed, but with the amazing sun, the run was effortless! Even with icy, wet, slushy roads.
Today's workout was a 100-minute run followed by a weight workout. With the icy weather (it rained all morning at 31F so was like an ice rink!), I stayed in, setting my iPod tunes up. I left just in time to make it to another 'Strictly Strength' class where the focus was definitely on core muscles. It hurt so much in my abdominals and hip flexors that I thought there was no way I could gut it through 100 minutes on a treadmill! But I did! And I was flying - a full 30 seconds per mile faster than the pace last week.
So the weekly totals are 10 hours of training for Week 1; 13 hours for Week 2! Whoo hoo! And this next week is a 'recovery' period so I'm certainly looking forward to the slightly easier effots!
Ciao!
MJ
p.s. I arrived home to a water issue - one of the outside faucets had burst [NO - I did drain it at the beginning of the Fall season!] and water was streaming out the side of the house! The faucet had rotted completely off the pipe. Thank goodness for Larry, the retired plumber and his reasonable rates. He is such a kind soul, too - coming out after 5 pm on a Sunday! Whew!
14 February 2008
Great Gear: Gaiters!
The run was completely toasty, although the snowflakes hitting my eyelashes made it difficult to see and of course, I couldn't go very fast!
Off to the fitness club for a run & weight workout tonight!
Happy Valentine's Day!

Lose Yourself!
After some veggie soup, I headed out, hoping to get there to start at 7:30-ish. On my way there (interrupted a bit when I had to return to get the workout that I forgot!), Eminem was on the radio. It might just be a perfect anthem for this first phase of training - should select a new one each phase to carry me onward... : )
Turns out there is a swim class in the lap pool each Monday & Wednesday from 7:30 - 8:30 pm, so it was a bit crowded. Ugh. But after they finished, there was amazing stillness. I needed it to complete the tough drill session. The challenging part was only 2 x (1x 400 as: (25 kick on stomach w/arms at side, 25 kick on left, 25 kick on right, 25 S2S) four times through) with 1 min rest before the next set. But it was HARD - another HTFU session!
It was the kick on stomach that was the most difficult - obviously what I needed to do the most to help my body position. It felt amazing to complete all 8 of them and the full set.
On the drive home, I was grinning ear-to-ear. Quite the endorphine junkie!
But as I've said earlier - I AM BACK! Can't wait for tomorrow's ride & t-run!

(p.s. Yesterday's temp w. windchill: a balmy -18 F and roughly similar today!)
10 February 2008
Did I say I 'HATED' being indoors?
It was 8F, with a bitter windchill (I'll check the actual temp and post later). After procrastinating for a couple of hours this morning, I set the DVR for all my home improvement shows and headed out, bundled completely. It was COLD!
Thank goodness for Lifetime - the sun was shining on the treadmill and I got to peoplewatch (more on that later, too). It was a true HTFU 90-minute run, followed by somewhat of an Easter Egg Hunt as I tried to locate all the weight equipment I needed to complete my simple 30-minute, 1x10 rep routine, but I did it. And enjoyed it!
I am BACK! : )
Will post more later about the Fitness Centre adventure. I truly am a 'newbie' in that world!

Butt Kicking!
For one hour, I tried to follow the choreography and keep up w. our very fit instructor. Wow - it was a great mix of work w. tension bands on arms & ankles as well as core moves strengthening the abdominals and glutes. I could feel it during and of course, today. I knew I had some room to improve (lots!) on my fitness, but this seemed to target muscles I have never used in any running/cycling/swimming.
I was happily exhausted and stoked!
For today's session on the trainer & for my t-run, I could feel the improvement in my core strength. While the run was far from fast due to the deep slush, water & ice all over the street, it felt fantastic. I think I should hop on the bike for a few minutes before every run so they can all feel like a transition run!
Fortunately, today's weather was mild - about 38F. Tomorrow's run will likely be on the treadmill at the Fitness Centre. Ugh. It's supposed to drop down to a high of 10F - seriously!!! I'm toughening up, but that would be crazy! Running at the Centre will make it easier to transition to a weight workout, so I hope to get there early and have the rest of the day for lounging!
Ciao! : )

This Quote Says it All!
Sam McGlone (from Triathlete Magazine, Feb. 2008)
That's what I felt like yesterday evening - the guy ripping flip turns yesterday had quite the tummy!
A Snowy Swim
Southeast Michigan had experienced sleet and ice pellets most of the day, making it a salty & wet commute to Lifetime Fitness. In the 90 minutes I was in the lap pool, the weather shifted to thick, huge fluffy wet snow. At one point during the swim, I glanced over to the large wall of windows, framed by tall pines and there were beautiful large flakes floating gracefully.
It was inspirational! I continued swimming with a smile on my face.
In the parking lot, my car was covered with a solid 2" of snow. A gentleman parked next to me was just arriving and asked if I had a snow brush - I did! He still helped me clear the snow off my car. Traffic inched carefully - the snow covered a 1/2" of gravel-like ice! It took 45 minutes to go the 5 miles home. But it was a gorgeous drive!
06 February 2008
Amazing Swim Tonight!
I think I've said before - it is all relative. : )
At yesterday's chiropractic session, I mentioned to Stacey that I was afraid of drowning. She did a bit of the fantastic holistic mind/body work she does and WOW - tonight I didn't even have a thought about that. The only thing that did pop into my mind almost at the end of the workout was that I could get 'beaten-up' by all the faster swimmers pummeling over me. That's probably the next thing to work on.
And an added bonus - no run tonight! I thought there was but there is only an optional 1 hour bike, which I'll pass on so that I can be fresher for tomorrow's run & weight workout.
Ciao!
Adapting to the Trainer
After the ride, my legs felt like lead. I hurried up the stairs from the basement and changed for a short run. Just 15 minutes. Running off the bike is one of my favorite things! I felt like I was flying! It was so psychologically great that the run was short - kept me moving easily and fluidly.
One quick comment on clothing. My extra small cycling shorts don't fit like they used to! ACK! I NEED to work out! Wow. As for the run, I love my new Nike arm band with encased blinking light. It wraps around my bicep and velco holds it in place.
Tonight is another swim followed by a long run. The run will be done outdoors, although the weather is not supposed to be great.
Although it is only Day 2, I'm really encouraged about the training program and about how my body has already adapted to training. The level of intensity is not high right now, but I feel the changes and adapations taking place. I also feel very confident about the program - it is really well done. So nice to simply 'follow the program' and not have the stress of planning or adjusting. Money well spent! Thanks for the recommendation, Ginger!
Until later ...
Ciao!

The Journey has begun ...
Lao-tzu, The Way of Lao-tzuChinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC)
I did it!
Arrived at the pool at about 3:30 pm. All lanes were full - mostly of older guys - one had someone wo was working w fins & paddles. I guess they have all afternoon to workout/swim. As I watched some of the older guys, I became very appreciative of my coach's input from the last year and a half that has improved my swim!
As I waited on deck, the thought of sharing a narrow lap lane was not great and it was looking bleak in terms of having a nice workout when one gentleman offered me his lane. No time like the 'NOW' - that is all there is.
The first 200 yards felt horrible. All I could think was that I was going to drop like a rock to the bottom of the lap pool. It was tough, but I gutted through the warm up and moved into the drills.
Midway through, I looked over at the guy in the next lane as he was finishing up. It was one of the guys from my tri club! The guy w. zoomers and paddles - he's finished several IM events and is a hammer on the bike & run. Wow.
We chatted a bit until some other swimmers asked if we were done. Back to work! I was amazed that the lap pool emptied out - I guess some people only need 15 minutes of swimming or I'd timed it right! Continued to fill 70 minutes and complete 1750 yards. Not stellar, considering that there are 4 224 yards in an IM swim! However, it is a start.
I slept very soundly last night, in spite of stiff shoulders. A visit to my incredible chiropractor, Stacey Francis, should straighten things out (no pun intended). Fortunately, I planned it for tonight, just before tonight's turbo bike workout and transition run.
Until then ... ciao!

Day One - the road to Ironman Lake Placid
I'm a bit nervous about getting into the lap pool at the fitness club - not because of any gross infirmity or fear of being seen in a swimsuit, but because this is the start of the road to IMLP. It begins here and there is no looking back.
After last year's false start, there is some additional weight on my shoulders - I really want to make it this time (to the start and to the finish)!
